How to Write a Cover Letter That Gets Read in 2025

Most cover letters are ignored. Learn the exact structure, tone, and content that makes recruiters actually read yours — with templates for UK, UAE, Germany, and USA.

Do Recruiters Actually Read Cover Letters?

Yes — but only if they're good. Research shows 83% of hiring managers say a great cover letter can get a candidate an interview even if the CV is borderline. But 90% of cover letters are generic, forgettable, and skipped entirely.

The bar is low. A well-written cover letter is a significant competitive advantage because most people write terrible ones.

The Cover Letter Mistakes That Get You Rejected

Starting with "I am writing to apply for..."

Every recruiter has read this sentence 10,000 times. It signals immediately that you're generic.

Summarising your CV

A cover letter is not a CV summary. Recruiters have already seen your CV. Don't repeat it — add to it.

Focusing on what you want, not what you offer

"I am looking to develop my skills in..." Nobody cares. The hiring manager wants to know what you bring to their team.

Generic letters sent to every employer

Recruiters can instantly tell when a letter isn't written for them. Generic = rejection.

Too long

One page maximum. Three paragraphs is ideal. Five is too many.

The Structure That Works (Every Time)

Opening Paragraph — Hook Them in 2 Sentences

Don't start with your name or "I am writing to apply". Start with something specific and compelling.

Formula: [Specific impressive achievement or connection to company] + [Why you're writing]

Example:

"After spending three years scaling Revolut's compliance function from 12 to 80 people across four jurisdictions, I've developed exactly the regulatory expertise and operational leadership that [Company]'s Head of Compliance role requires."

That's a hook. It's specific, impressive, and immediately relevant.

Middle Paragraph — The Evidence (2-3 paragraphs max)

This is where you prove you can do the job. Pick 2-3 specific achievements that directly match the job requirements. Use the CAR formula: Challenge → Action → Result.

Don't list everything. Pick the most relevant evidence and go deep on it.

Example:

"At Barclays, I led the implementation of a real-time AML monitoring system across 14 million accounts — a project that had previously stalled twice. By restructuring the vendor relationship and running a phased rollout, I delivered on schedule with zero regulatory incidents and £2.3M under budget."

Closing Paragraph — Confident, Not Begging

Don't say "I hope to hear from you" or "I would welcome the opportunity to discuss." Be confident.

Formula: Reiterate fit + clear call to action

Example:

"I'd welcome a conversation about how my compliance leadership experience translates to [Company]'s expansion into the EU market. I'm available this week and next."

Country-Specific Conventions

UK Cover Letters

  • Formal but not stiff. Professional warmth is valued.
  • Address to a named person if possible ("Dear Mr Smith" not "Dear Sir/Madam")
  • One page, 3-4 paragraphs
  • Sign off: "Yours sincerely" (named person) or "Yours faithfully" (unnamed)

UAE Cover Letters

  • More formal than UK. Show respect for the company and role.
  • Mentioning UAE/Gulf experience or interest in the region is valued
  • Salary expectations can be mentioned in the closing
  • Keep it concise — Dubai recruiters handle high volumes

Germany (Anschreiben)

  • Highly formal structure expected
  • Always address to a named person
  • Explain specifically why THIS company — generic letters are particularly rejected in Germany
  • Formal sign-off: "Mit freundlichen Grüßen"
  • Include date and your address

USA Cover Letters

  • More conversational and energetic than UK/Germany
  • Lead with your biggest achievement immediately
  • Use American English (realize, organization, color)
  • Can be slightly shorter than UK letters

The One Thing That Makes Cover Letters Easy

The biggest cover letter mistake isn't bad writing — it's writing a cover letter for a CV that isn't tailored to the role in the first place.

If your CV already matches the job description well, the cover letter almost writes itself. You're just expanding on 2-3 of the achievements already on your CV.

FixerCV rewrites your CV to match the specific job description you're targeting — which makes your cover letter significantly easier to write, because all the evidence is already in front of you. The premium report also includes a full cover letter written for your specific role.
